The Ottawa 200 Project is a living digital time capsule created to mark the 200th anniversary of Bytown, celebrating the city and its communities under the theme Celebrate Together.
Ottawa 200 Project
The project documents Ottawa before its 200th anniversary and continues for five years beyond the anniversary carrying the time capsule forward through 2031
Using highly visual digital media, including aerial and ground based filming, the Ottawa 200 Project captures Ottawa from multiple perspectives and shares this work publicly through digital platforms. Social media serves as a primary way the project is experienced, allowing residents and visitors to see their own communities reflected and to engage with the work across the city and beyond.
Public access, participation, and skill development are central to the Ottawa 200 Project. In addition to documenting the city, the project supports the development of artists and creators by providing training, mentorship, and hands on learning opportunities in digital storytelling. Participants gain practical experience in visual creation, editing, publishing, and responsible use of digital media.
The project includes outreach to students, first time and emerging creators, and community members who are interested in learning how to document and share their own neighbourhoods and cultures. Through guided mentorship and shared practice, participants are supported in developing their creative skills while contributing to a collective, community driven record of Ottawa.
Through film, photography, audio, and community participation, the Ottawa 200 Project explores Ottawa’s shared history past, present, and future. This approach encourages dialogue, meaningful connection, and a sense of belonging by ensuring that diverse voices and lived experiences are represented and made visible.
In 2026, the Ottawa 200 Project will present a series of temporary, public facing digital works and activations created during the Bytown 200th anniversary year. These works will be accessible to residents and visitors and will serve as a key public milestone within the larger time capsule project, while forming part of a long term digital archive preserved for future generations.
The Ottawa 200 Project is not only a celebration of the city’s past, but an invitation to celebrate together by documenting, learning, sharing, and reflecting on who we are, how we live, and how Ottawa continues to evolve.
